Facebook Privacy Settings

A few tips on protecting your facebook content.

1) Categorise your friends into "lists". Go through your friends list (Click Friends -> All Friends) and add them into a group such as: School Friends, Work People, Family, Randoms, Whatever...

When you invite or accept a new friendship, add them to a list straight away, so everyone is in a list.

2) Protect your areas of your profile by default: (Settings -> Privacy Settings ... ) go through each section and choose who can and cannot do or see certain areas of your profile by default. You can customise these settings also, for example: Friends Only; EXCEPT Randoms.

3) Go through your photo albums. Under the options section, you can set the same privacy settings for each album. you may not want Randoms seeing your kids, or work mates seeing your social photos.

4) You can test your privacy settings by viewing your profile as if you are someone else. Click Settings -> Privacy Settings -> Click any category -> click Preview Profile -> type in the name of your friend and go! Check you are getting the results you are after.

5) You can now select which groups can and cannot see individual posts by clicking the little privacy padlock on the item before you post or share.

What about "private use"? Here's what AFACT says

Executive director Adrianne Pecotic says AFACT has more interest in catching those releasing bootleg movies rather than those sitting on the couch downloading them.

Here's what Pecotic told me this week;

"Our aim is not to be going in and bashing down people's doors, or suggesting that the police should be taking enforcement action against people who are downloading. It's not something we should be wasting police resources on. Police resources are a scarce resource and need to be used very appropriately to target people who are stealing copies of movies and then uploading them."

I was quite surprised to discover how much power some new computers consume recently. When I had to upgrade a comptuer to a 650w Power Supply to get it to boot reliably, I did a quick google search on the subject and found some samples a friendly net user has published. Border Security to Become Copyright Police?

A proposed trade agreement could authorize border agents to search the contents of laptops and iPods for copyrighted material

As if the security in airports and controls at border crossings weren't slow and intrusive enough, governments around the world are quietly passing laws to allow them to search the contents of your laptop and other electronic devices, like iPods and cellphones. A United States court last month gave border agents carte blanche to hold a laptop for days and even copy its entire contents. The UK government has given its agents authority to search computers at its borders for pornography. But in what may be the most baffling and cumbersome move of all, the US, Canada, UK, and other EU nations are working behind closed doors on a new trade agreement which could turn border agents into the copyright police.

A four-page draft document [PDF] proposing the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) was leaked to the press this week which show plans for the creation of an international copyright regulator with its enforcement arm as each nation's border patrols. Guards and security personnel would be authorized to search electronic devices for any content that "infringes" on copyright laws, whether the copies are from legally purchased CDs or DVDs or not, and decide on the spot which content is infringing. The officials would be given authority to take action without any formalized complaint from the rights holders and without a lawyer present on behalf of the accused. The draft allows for the confiscation or destruction of any device the agents deem suspect.

The ACTA specifically calls for the coalition to operate outside the WTO and UN by forming its own governing body overseen by member nations. While the document is still in draft form, there is little reason to believe the actual agreement won't follow the draft's recommendations. Without public scrutiny or comment, the member states will have no impetus for transparency.

Google have taken the online social networking battle to a new level with the announcement of a new set of APIs that can be used to create applications on any site that wishes to participate.

When Google announced that its new social-networking initiative would extend to any site that wanted to be involved, the land grab for the social Web's attention just got a whole lot more intense.

In a move that was anticipated for weeks, Google has unveiled a set of application program interfaces (APIs) that allow third-party programmers to build widgets that take advantage of personal data and profile connections on a social-networking site. But instead of limiting the project to its own social-networking property, Orkut, Google has invited other sites along for the ride -- including LinkedIn, Hi5, Plaxo, Ning, and Friendster.

The initiative, appropriately, is called "OpenSocial". It's a clear contrast to Facebook, the social-networking site that became the talk of the tech world when it announced the opening of its developer platform in May but has kept developer activity restricted to its own service (and has since signed an exclusive ad deal with Microsoft in exchange for an equity investment, likely snubbing Google in the process). When other social networks began to announce their own "platform strategies" this fall, concerns were raised that developers would have to create a completely new application for each site. That could prove inefficient and costly, especially for smaller developers working on a shoestring budget.

OpenSocial, should it prove successful, would change that entirely. "At its highest level, Google is a company that is dependent upon having a great Web platform," said Joe Kraus, Google's director of product management, in an interview with ZDNet Australia sister site CNET News.com. "This announcement is about making the Web better."

iPhone strikes another blow

I just found this on Slashdot.org which I thought might be interesting to a few folks I've spoken to recently that seem fixated on the iPhone.

"Just days after the first scareware for OSX, researchers are pondering the problems of an iPhone exploit that could lead to larger issues. The Trojan pulls legitimate apps off the phone if you try to remove it, but it only infects iPhones that have 'been modified or opened through a security hole in the system.' Though this worm is more of an annoyance than anything else, it could be a proof of concept for a more serious attack. 'The fear is hackers may be experimenting and gathering research that will increase the dangers of a more malicious attack in the near future. It is clear at least one writer -- the author of this piece at Web Worker Daily -- thinks that the iPhone should be left on the dresser in the morning. She offers several reasons that the device isn't a good corporate tool.'"

I am personally nervous of successful marketing campaign by Apple, and think everyone should slow down and actually compare products that begin with "i" to competing products that don't begin with "i". There are plenty of products that compete very well with the iPod for example, and the iPhone has not been released in Australia for some very good reasons, A quick Google search can give you the word on the street.
